Environmental Health - Hair and Beauty Salons

Page Updated: September 29, 2011

Barbers, Hairdressing and Beauty salons

Premises that undertake hair dressing and beauty treatments which do not involve skin penetration must take precaution by following strict hygiene procedures and have clean equipment and premises.

Infections can spread when instruments and equipment used on clients are not cleaned between client sessions or are not handled or used in a hygienic manner, and when structural facilities such as furnishings and fittings are not kept clean and in good repair. Both clients and operators are at risk.

Sanitary Requirements of the Premises

Some requirements that relate to hair dressing premises and beauty salons include:

  • The premises must be kept in a clean and hygienic condition at all times
  • All surfaces within the premises should be made of materials that are easily cleaned
  • Adequate lighting is to be provided in the premises
  • A hand wash basin must be provided within the premises with warm running water and a supply of disposable paper hand towels and liquid soap
  • An additional sink is to be provided for cleaning of equipment and surfaces
  • Smoking is not permitted in the premises

Hairdresser premises and beauty salons that carry out skin penetration procedures in addition are required to comply with more detailed requirements under the Public Health (Skin Penetration) Regulation 2000.

Any new beautician or hairdresser premises must have development approval.  You are recommended to check with Council’s Planning Section prior to undertaking any works or starting the business.
