Native Animals

King Parrot

Find out about our native creatures – they could be living in your backyard! Remember, all native animals, including snakes, are protected and you’re not allowed to harm them.

Injured or Orphaned Animals

If you find an injured or orphaned native animal, call a wildlife rescue organisation such as WIRES or Sydney Wildlife straight away.

In the meantime, handle the animal as little as possible, place it in a towel or blanket and place it in a box in a warm, quiet room and do not give it food or water.

Volunteers from wildlife organisations are specially trained to look after various native animals including birds and reptiles. They will look after the animal until it is ready to be returned to the wild. It is against the law to keep native animals taken from the wild.

Wildlife Protection Areas

In order to protect our precious native wildlife, we have wildlife protection areas. Cats are prohibited from these areas at all times and dogs must remain on a leash. All areas are signposted and residents are asked to keep their pets away from these areas. You cannot collect marine plants or animals from marine reserves.
