Impounded dogs and cats are held at the council pound currently located at:

  • If an impounded dog or cat is registered, Council will house the animal at the pound for 14 days while trying to contact the owner.
  • If the animal is unregistered Council will house the animal for seven days.
  • Animals whose owner cannot be found will be sent to the Animal Welfare League for rehoming if suitable.

Collecting an impounded animal

Identification or a letter of authority from the owner is required before an impounded animal is released. All dogs and cats must be microchipped and registered before they will be released from the pound. See microchipping and registration for further information.

Impounding fees

Should your animal be impounded, pound fees must be paid before it is released. In some cases owners may also be issued with a penalty infringement notice (fine) in addition to pound fees. Payment includes both a flat fee for impounding and a sustenance fee per day/part day that the animal is impounded.

  • First day $66
  • Each subsequent day $33
  • Additional fees may be payable if the animal has to be microchipped and/or lifetime registered or veterinary treatment is required.
